NATIONAL CERTIFICATE IN BUSINESS STUDIES

Aims
The aims of this course are: to provide a general understanding of the administrative, economic, legal and social environment within which business operates; to provide a high level of competence at sub-professional level in accountancy or marketing, and to provide a foundation in business education for further professional or academic study and/or career progression.

Entry Requirements
MINIMUM entry requirement: Pass (Grade D3 or better) in five Leaving Certificate subjects, including Mathematics and English or Irish. In practice, entry levels are significantly above the minimum and points are calculated from the SIX best subjects.

Course Duration
Two years full-time study. Students can specialise at the start of the second year in one of two areas: Accountancy or Marketing

Career Outlets
Most students holding NCEA awards in Business Studies work in industrial and commercial enterprises in the accounting, financial services, marketing and administrative sections. Some work with professionals in practice and proceed to membership of a relevant professional body. The good business studies graduate who continues his/her studies and qualifies in accountancy, marketing or personnel management can, with suitable experience, look forward to eventual promotion to senior management. A special emphasis is placed on enterprise development and every encouragement is given to students to start their own businesses.

Year 1
Accountancy, Business Mathematics and Statistics, Economics, Business Law, Behavioural Science/Communications, Choice from: Business French/German/Spanish/Irish.

Year 2
Data Processing, Enterprise Development and Management, Marketing and a modern language plus two subjects from Accountancy, Taxation/Finance, Sales Management and EU Studies.

Opportunites for Further Study
Graduates can transfer to National Diploma and Degree programme at this or other colleges and universities in Ireland and elsewhere. Such transfers are normally dependent on merit level results and on comparability of course programmes. Linkages with EU colleges are opening up exciting new possibilities for further study.

NATIONAL CERTIFICATE IN BUSINESS STUDIES [Agri-Business]

GA004 AGRIBUS

This course is offered jointly by the Regional Technical College Galway and the Agricultural College, Mountbellew, Co. Galway. Year one of the course is provided in Mountbellew Agricultural College and year two in the Regional Technical College Galway.

In year 1, the Agricultural College, Mountbellew, organises accommodation in the locality and meals are provided in the college. Adequate facilities exist for field and indoor sports as well as social activities. During year 2, students must arrange their own accommodation.

Regardless of the ESF grant and RTC Galway registration fees, a charge of about �500 is payable to the Agricultural College on arrival, as part-payment for maintenance and accommodation.

Aims
The aim of this course is to provide students with a knowledge and competence in agriculture as well as a good business education to enable them secure employment in the agri-business sector of the economy.

Aims
The overall objective of the course is to provide students with the necessary knowledge, skills, and competence to enable them undertake administrative work using modern information technology. In addition to developing proficiency in office administration, students will acquire a general business education as well as competence in a wide range of hardware and software in the areas of Word Processing, Desk Top Publishing and computerised business applications.

Course Duration
Two years full time study.

Career Outlets
On completion of the course, students will be capable of undertaking a wide range of administrative duties in either traditional or modern technological offices. They will also have developed a firm foundation on which to pursue further studies towards specialised careers in business. The course will also provide an opportunity for personal, social and cultural development. The inclusion of modern European languages will aid students� mobility within the European Community.

Aims
This course aims to provide students with a specialised education in accountancy and related subjects.

Entry Requirements
National Certificate in Business Studies with a Distinction or Merit or an equivalent qualification. An applicant holding a pass National Certificate in Business Studies with one year�s appropriate post certificate experience will be considered for admission having regard to academic performance, the nature of the work experience and the availability of places.

Course Duration
One year full-time study.

Career Outlets
The course prepares students for employment in the accounting function of industry and commerce and with firms of professional accountants as well as other financial services.

The aim of this course is to educate students in the principles and techniques of Marketing Management.

Course Duration
One year full-time study.

Career Outlets
Graduates are equipped to take complete charge of the marketing function in small or medium sized organisations and to take up employment in specialist marketing functions like Distribution Management, Marketing Research, Advertising/Promotions/Public Relations, Export Marketing, Product Management, etc.

Semester 1
Marketing Management, Market Research, Consumer Behaviour, Management Information Systems, and two from Services Marketing, Management Studies, Business French OR Business German OR Business Spanish.

Semester 2
Marketing Management, Market Research, Marketing Communications, Financial Management, and two from Tourism Marketing, Retailing, Management 2, Business French OR Business German OR Business Spanish. Students are strongly advised to take a language.

Note:
This course is semesterised to facilitate student mobility. Semester 1 can be spent in RTC Galway or on a comparable integrated course in another EU country on an ERASMUS exchange. The School of Business Studies has exchange programmes with colleges in Germany, France, the Netherlands, Denmark, Greece and the U.K.

A National Diploma in Business Studies (Marketing) provides for exemptions in Stages 1, 2 and 3 of the graduateship programme depending on the electives taken.

Graduates with merit of distinction can proceed to the final year of the Bachelor of Business Studies degree course at this college and/or proceed to full membership of the Marketing Institute of Ireland.

NATIONAL DIPLOMA IN BUSINESS STUDIES [Marketing Skills]

Aims
The objective of the National Diploma in Business Studies (Marketing Skills) is to provide young people who have a National Diploma or a Degree in a technical discipline like science, engineering or languages with a specialised marketing education. This is a unique course, the only one of its kind in the country.

Entry Requirements
MINIMUM entry requirement is a Degree or a National Diploma in engineering, science, languages, and other relevant disciplines.

Course Duration
One year full-time study.

There are many employment opportunities available in industrial marketing for people with a technical qualification and a specialised marketing qualification.
