County Mayo is a unique region on the Western seaboard of Ireland. That unique character was marked recently by celebrations of 5000 years of rural civilisation and culture.

Regional Technical College, Galway - Castlebar Campus is situated inb the heart of Co. Mayo, in the county's capital, Castlebar. Castlebar combines all that is best of the ancient and modern. A thriving commercial centre, the town is bustling and vibrant and boasts many modern amenities including an airport.

Castlebar began as a settlement where a castle was built by the De Barra (Barry) family. The town assumed an increased importance when James 1 granted it a borough charter in 1611.

Later it became famous during the 1798 Rebellion after the routing of the British army by a joint Irish-French force in a battle that became known as the "Races of Castlebar".

Castlebar is surrounded by the scenic lakes and mountains of Mayo and has many attractions to offer tourist, student and native alike. There are many beautiful beaches in the area and facilities range from indoor recreational centres and night spots to tennis and golf clubs.

The town centre with its hotels, restaurants, sjopping areas, library, swimming pool, pubs and discos is only a ten minute walk from the campus. The vigour and vitality of the town make it an exciting place to go to college.

The College's main campus at Galway has a student population of approximately 5,300. The College is made up of four faculties :

The Castlebar Campus, which is part of Regional Technical College, Galway but is a separate campus at Castlebar, opened in September 1994 and has a current enrolment of 119 students. It is envisaged that enrolment will increase to approximately 1,000 students by the turn of the century.

The campus offers other course in the areas of Business, Engineering, Computing and Hotel & catering Studies.

Students at Castlebar enjoy the advantages of being part of a relatively small student population with a high staff to student ratio whilst reaping the benefits of being associated with a large, well established college of high reputation.
